The Relationship between Perceived Parental Psychological Control and Social Anxiety in College Students: The Mediating Effects of Unconditional Self-Acceptance and Emotional Clarity

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effects of unconditional self-acceptance and emotional clarity in the relationship between parental psychological control and social anxiety among college students. Questionnaires assessing parental psychological control, social anxiety, unconditional self-acceptance and emotional clarity were administered to college students, and the data of 298 were analyzed. SPSS PROCESS Macro with bootstrapping resampling was conducted to examine the indirect effects in the mediation model. The results indicated that (a) parental psychological control, social anxiety, unconditional self-acceptance, and emotional clarity were significantly correlated with each other: (b) unconditional self-acceptance partially mediated the relationship between maternal psychological control and social anxiety: (c) emotional clarity fully mediated the relationship between paternal psychological control and social anxiety: and (d) unconditional self-acceptance and emotional clarity sequentially and dually mediated the relationship between maternal psychological control and social anxiety. This study provides practical implications for treatment and prevention of social anxiety for college students. Limitations of the study and recommendations for future study are discussed.
